Since we are relatively new to sailing, we have been on a crash course program to prepare for our trip.  Here are the steps we have taken over the last five years:

2000-2003: Learned to sail by taking ASA courses- Basic Keel Boat; Coastal cruising; Bareboat Chartering
Completed John & Amanda Neal Cruising Seminar
Obtained ham radio licenses
Completed a three day emergency medical course for cruisers
Completed self study celestial navigation course
Self study and class room courses in Weather, Diesel Engines, Radar, Navigation Rules
Crewed in Friday Night Races and Midwinter Races on Brezza Bella at Corinthian Yacht Club
Won the 2005 Passport World Regatta with a cracker jack crew
Read approximately 45 books on boat maintenance, weather, cruising, etc.
Shopped for boat for 6 months
Purchased Georgia J, a Passport 47+3 foot swim step = 50
Spent 3 months in Ensenda, Mexico and brought Georgia J to San Francisco
Bareboat chartered in British Virgin Islands and Balleric Islands
